WebP is Google's image format designed for smaller file sizes on the web. According to Google's documentation, lossy WebP is 25-34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, and lossless WebP is 26% smaller than PNG. Browser support exceeds 96%, but many desktop applications and image editors still cannot open WebP files directly.
HTTP Archive data shows WebP averages 1.3 bits per pixel, compared to 3.8 for PNG and 2.0 for JPEG. A 4 MB product photo saved as JPEG at 85% quality drops to roughly 3 MB. The same image as WebP is closer to 2 MB. For photographs, the savings are even larger because lossy WebP discards data the eye does not notice.
