Choosing between PNG and JPG depends on your image content and how you plan to use it. HTTP Archive data shows PNG accounts for 28.4% of web image requests and JPEG for 32.4%, making them the two most-used image formats on the web. PNG averages 3.8 bits per pixel versus JPEG's 2.0, so a 1920x1080 screenshot is roughly 1.2 MB as PNG and 250 KB as JPG at 85% quality.
PNG compression is lossless: every pixel is preserved exactly as the original. JPG compression is lossy, discarding visual data the eye does not easily notice. For photographs, this tradeoff saves 60-80% of file size with no visible difference at quality settings above 80%. For screenshots and text, PNG is the better choice because JPG compression creates visible artifacts around sharp edges.
