Photo filenames like "IMG_20240315_143052.jpg" reveal exactly when you took the photo. "Samsung_Galaxy_S24" tells people your device. Screenshot filenames often include timestamps. This tool strips these identifying patterns from filenames before you share files.

What filenames can reveal

IMG_20240315_143052.jpg: Date (March 15) and time (2:30 PM) the photo was taken
Samsung_Galaxy_S24_Ultra_photo.jpg: Device make, model, and variant

John_Smith_passport_scan.pdf: Full name and document type
DC-IMG00847.jpg: Camera-specific prefix that links photos to a specific device

These patterns persist through email forwards, cloud uploads, and file sharing. Anyone who receives the file sees the filename.

Why clean filenames locally

The FBI Denver Field Office has warned about malware distributed through free online file converters. Renaming files locally avoids sending your files and their metadata-rich filenames to a third-party server. This tool renames files entirely in your browser. The file contents are never read, and the originals remain untouched on your device.
