Social Media Image Sizes

Every dimension for every major platform, in one place

Quick reference

The most common sizes across platforms:

Use Dimensions Ratio
Square post 1080 x 1080 1:1
Story / Reel 1080 x 1920 9:16
Landscape post 1200 x 630 1.91:1
Profile photo 400 x 400 1:1

Instagram

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
Feed post (square) 1080 x 1080 1:1 Most reliable display
Feed post (portrait) 1080 x 1350 4:5 Takes up more screen space in the feed
Feed post (landscape) 1080 x 566 1.91:1 Smaller in feed, less engagement
Story / Reel 1080 x 1920 9:16 Full-screen vertical
Profile photo 320 x 320 1:1 Displayed at 110px circle, upload larger

Instagram compresses uploads aggressively. For the sharpest results, upload JPG at 1080px wide and keep file size under 1MB. Images wider than 1080px get downscaled. Dimensions verified against platform documentation as of February 2026.

Twitter / X

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
In-stream image 1200 x 675 16:9 Displayed in timeline without cropping
Header / banner 1500 x 500 3:1 Crops differently on mobile vs desktop
Profile photo 400 x 400 1:1 Displayed as circle
Card image (link preview) 1200 x 628 1.91:1 Set via og:image meta tag

Twitter applies JPEG compression to uploaded images. PNG uploads under 900 x 900 with fewer than 256 colors stay as PNG. Anything larger gets converted to JPEG. Keep file size under 5MB for photos, 15MB for GIFs.

LinkedIn

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
Feed post 1200 x 627 1.91:1 Landscape works best in the feed
Personal banner 1584 x 396 4:1 Cropped on mobile, keep text centered
Company banner 1128 x 191 5.9:1 Very wide, use simple graphics
Profile photo 400 x 400 1:1 Displayed at various sizes across the platform
Article cover 1200 x 644 1.86:1 Top of LinkedIn articles

LinkedIn accepts JPG, PNG, and GIF. Maximum file size is 10MB for images. For link previews (og:image), 1200 x 627 is the standard dimension that displays correctly across desktop and mobile feeds.

Facebook

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
Feed post 1200 x 630 1.91:1 Recommended by Facebook for link shares
Cover photo 820 x 312 2.63:1 Displays at 820 x 312 on desktop, 640 x 360 on mobile
Profile photo 170 x 170 1:1 Displayed as circle, upload at 400 x 400 for best quality
Event cover 1200 x 628 1.91:1 Same as standard link preview dimensions
Story 1080 x 1920 9:16 Full-screen vertical, same as Instagram

Facebook recompresses all uploads. For the least compression artifacting, upload JPG images at the recommended dimensions rather than larger images that Facebook will downscale.

YouTube

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
Video thumbnail 1280 x 720 16:9 Minimum 640px wide, under 2MB
Channel banner 2560 x 1440 16:9 Safe area for text: center 1546 x 423
Profile photo 800 x 800 1:1 Displayed at 98px circle, upload larger

YouTube thumbnails are critical for click-through rate. Use 1280 x 720 with large, readable text. Keep the file under 2MB. JPG is recommended for photographic thumbnails.

TikTok

Type Dimensions (px) Ratio Notes
Video cover / thumbnail 1080 x 1920 9:16 Full-screen vertical
Profile photo 200 x 200 1:1 Small display size, keep it simple

TikTok is a vertical-first platform. All content images should be 9:16 ratio. Profile photos are small, so use a clear, recognizable image without fine details.

General tips

  • Always use the recommended dimensions. Uploading larger images forces the platform to resize, which can introduce compression artifacts. Match the exact pixel dimensions when possible.
  • JPG for photos, PNG for graphics. Photos compress well as JPG. Logos, text overlays, and graphics with sharp edges look better as PNG (platforms will convert if needed).
  • Strip metadata before uploading. Most platforms strip EXIF data, but not all. Remove GPS coordinates and device info yourself with a metadata stripper for guaranteed privacy.
  • Keep file sizes reasonable. Under 1MB for most social posts. Under 2MB for YouTube thumbnails. Large files take longer to upload and get compressed more aggressively.
  • Test on mobile. Most social media is consumed on phones. Check that text is readable and key elements are visible at smaller screen sizes.

Common questions

What is the best image format for social media?

JPG for photographs and images with gradients. PNG for graphics with text, logos, or sharp edges. Every major platform accepts both. WebP is not universally supported for uploads yet.

Should I resize before uploading?

Yes. Uploading a 4000 x 3000 photo to Instagram (which displays at 1080px wide) wastes bandwidth and gives the platform more data to recompress. Resize to the target dimensions first, then upload. The result is a sharper image with fewer compression artifacts.

Does file size affect upload quality?

Platforms compress all uploads, but they compress large files more aggressively. A 500KB JPG at the correct dimensions will look sharper after platform compression than a 5MB JPG that gets downscaled and recompressed.

What is an OG image?

OG (Open Graph) image is the preview image shown when you share a link on social media. It is set with a meta tag in the page HTML. The standard size is 1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio), which works across Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and Slack.
